چکیده

Study Examines Epigenetic Effects of Fungicide Exposure A mother’s environmental exposure can result in transgenerational effects that are inherited through successive generations, even in the absence of exposure of the offspring. A new proof-of-principle study reports that great-grandchildren of rats exposed to the common fungicide vinclozolin showed a more profound behavioral and neurodevelopmental response to stress, compared with offspring of unexposed rats. Following exposure to stressful situations during adolescence, ancestrally exposed rats were heavier, more anxious, and less sociable than unexposed offspring.

Chlorpyrifos exposure and urban residential environment characteristics as determinants of early childhood neurodevelopment.

OBJECTIVES We evaluated whether neighborhood characteristics correlated with early neurodevelopment and whether these characteristics confounded the previously reported association between exposure to chlorpyrifos (an organophosphate insecticide) and neurodevelopment. METHODS We obtained prenatal addresses, chlorpyrifos exposure data, and 36-month Psychomotor Development Index (PDI) and Menta...

Effect of chlorpyrifos on sperm characteristics and testicular tissue changes in adult male rats

Chlorpyrifos (CPF) is a broad spectrum organophosphate pesticide used for agricultural health purposes. Its principal mechanism of toxicity is the inhibition of acetylcholinesterase. The purpose of present study was to investigate the effects of CPF on testicular tissue and sperm parameters in male rats. Thirty-two healthy male rats were divided into two groups: a CPF-exposed group and a contro...

In utero pesticide exposure, maternal paraoxonase activity, and head circumference.

Although the use of pesticides in inner-city homes of the United States is of considerable magnitude, little is known about the potentially adverse health effects of such exposure. Recent animal data suggest that exposure to pesticides during pregnancy and early life may impair growth and neurodevelopment in the offspring. To investigate the relationship among prenatal pesticide exposure, parao...

Impact of prenatal chlorpyrifos exposure on neurodevelopment in the first 3 years of life among inner-city children.

OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of prenatal exposure to chlorpyrifos on 3-year neurodevelopment and behavior in a sample of inner-city minority children. METHODS As part of an ongoing prospective cohort study in an inner-city minority population, neurotoxicant effects of prenatal exposure to chlorpyrifos were evaluated in 254 children through the first 3 year...

Abiotic transformation of chlorpyrifos to chlorpyrifos oxon in chlorinated water.

In vivo transformation of chlorpyrifos to chlorpyrifos oxon is believed to be a prerequisite for this insecticide to display acute toxicity to organisms. We discovered that active chlorine dispersed in water causes the rapid abiotic transformation of chlorpyrifos to chlorpyrifos oxon. The proposed mechanism for the transformation is an electrophilic attack by hypochlorous acid (HOCl) on the thi...
